Package Design, Brand Development
Justin Anderson has been pretty busy the past decade.
The 26-year-old Houston native founded Anderson Trail Soft Granola as a 16-year-old student at Robert E. Lee High School. It came about one day as he was snacking on granola after school. The granola was so crunchy that it broke one of the brackets off his braces. Sorry, mom!
After testing several recipes and determined to enjoy granola his way, the high school junior founded Anderson Trail Soft Granola in his own kitchen. Justin’s final product was a bite-sized soft granola that is especially friendly for people with braces.

After his snack became a new favorite among friends, he then decided to take his business to the next level. With a $500 loan from his grandma, Justin set out on his entrepreneurial journey. Ten years later a second granola brand under Anderson was launched — Woats. Woats brand includes three flavors — Nuts About Berries, Cookies ‘n’ Dreams and Peanut Butter Graham Slam.
These days Anderson Trail, now based in Fort Worth, advocates education through scholarships for high school students and awards scholarships aimed at students who have “demonstrated the passion and ambition to succeed in doing what inspires them most.” The company also donates $1 of every bag of Woats it sells online to a different mission program; the chosen recipient program changes every three months. Justin’s entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropic work even attracted the attention of President Barack Obama, and he was able to visit with the President last year in Austin.
Challenge:
When tasked with designing package labels for Anderson Trail Granola, the primary challenge was to develop a cohesive and visually appealing color system that would effectively communicate the product's unique soft texture while also reflecting its natural and wholesome ingredients. Our goal was to create a package design that stood out on store shelves, captured consumers' attention, and conveyed the indulgent experience of Anderson Trail Granola.
Solution:
To address this challenge, our team embarked on a comprehensive exploration of color psychology and its impact on consumer behavior. We identified colors that evoked feelings of warmth, comfort, and indulgence, while also reflecting the natural ingredients used in Anderson Trail Granola. Drawing inspiration from the granola's soft texture and wholesome flavors, we developed a vibrant color system that included soft tones such as green browns and soft greens, as well as pops of bright colors to add visual interest and excitement.
Each color in the system was carefully selected to convey a specific aspect of the product, whether it be the rich flavor of chocolate and nuts or the refreshing taste of fruits and berries. We employed a harmonious blend of colors across different flavor variants, ensuring consistency and coherence while allowing each flavor to maintain its unique identity.
In addition to color selection, we also paid close attention to color placement and balance within the package design. Bold color blocks were used strategically to draw attention to key product features and messaging, while subtle gradients and textures added depth and dimension to the overall design.
Result:
The implementation of a vibrant color system proved to be instrumental in the success of Anderson Trail Granola's package designs. The use of bright, inviting colors effectively communicated the product's indulgent experience and fresh appeal, while also helping it stand out on crowded store shelves.
Consumers responded positively to the colorful and visually appealing package designs, with many expressing excitement and interest in trying Anderson Trail Granola for the first time. The cohesive color system helped establish brand recognition and consistency across different flavor variants, reinforcing Anderson Trail Granola's position as a leader in the soft granola category.
Overall, our development of a vibrant color system for Anderson Trail Granola package designs played a big role in enhancing brand visibility, attracting consumers' attention, and ultimately driving sales and market success.
