Brand Development + Application Design for AirTrain JFK and AirTrain Newark

Pentagram // New York, NY

I had the unique opportunity to design for the AirTrain JFK at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This design strategy focuses on enhancing passenger experience through clear navigation, aesthetic coherence, and functional durability.

Under the direction of Pentagram’s Gericke team, we successfully implemented a branding system at JFK and Newark airports, highlighting their commitment to enhancing passenger experience through thoughtful, effective, and visually appealing wayfinding solutions.

Wayfinding and Signage Systems //
We created a clear and intuitive navigation system for passengers by using bold typography, consistent iconography, and strategic color coding. This approach ensures that signage is easily recognizable and understandable, guiding travelers seamlessly through airport and transit connections. The signage includes multiple languages to accommodate these airports' international nature. Electronic displays provide real-time updates on train schedules, delays, and other pertinent travel information, enhancing travel efficiency.

Aesthetic and Functional Design //
The design employs a modern, clean aesthetic that aligns with the architecture of the airports and transit stations, creating a cohesive and pleasant environment. Materials used for signage are chosen for their durability and ability to withstand heavy usage and environmental conditions, ensuring longevity and reducing maintenance needs.

Coherent System and User-Friendly Design //
The signage system provides coherence and ease of navigation from airport terminals to AirTrain stations and beyond to New Jersey Transit and Amtrak connections. Straightforward language, clear icons, and distinguishable colors help all passengers, including those unfamiliar with the airport or city, to navigate efficiently. Signage and information boards are placed strategically for maximum visibility and accessibility, reducing confusion and stress.

Passenger Experience Enhancement //
Pentagram incorporated consistent branding elements that align with the overall look and feel of Newark Liberty International Airport, enhancing visual harmony and user experience. Some signage includes interactive elements, such as touchscreens, providing passengers with customizable information based on their specific needs and preferences.
